Gilbert de Bontridder Prijs 2026

De jury bestond uit Hicham Khalidi, Morena Bamberger en ikzelf, Anke Bangma — twee curatoren en een kunstenaar. Alle drie waren we diep onder de indruk van de eindpresentaties van de beeldend kunstenaars in het Stuers gebouw.

Jullie presentaties zijn authentiek en eigenzinnig, met een eigen thematiek, beeldtaal, verbeeldingskracht en gebruik van media en materialen. Maar jullie presentaties delen ook iets met elkaar. Om te beginnen was het opvallend hoe jullie jezelf hebben uitgedaagd; ieder van jullie heeft iets neergezet dat zowel experimenteel is als ambitieus. Soms betekende dat zelfs het bewust aangaan van een grote nieuwe artistieke stap. Dit getuigt van lef, en van een volwassen vertrouwen in het kunstenaarschap — een vertrouwen waarvoor de opleiding duidelijk de ruimte wist te bieden.

Wat daarnaast opviel is met hoeveel bravoure en fijnzinnigheid jullie je werk hebben gerealiseerd in dialoog met de prachtige ruimtes in het Stuers gebouw. Met imposante of juist heel subtiele ingrepen hebben jullie de ruimte—en hoe ik mij daar als bezoeker doorheen beweeg—deel van het werk gemaakt. Dit versterkt de zeggingskracht van jullie werk enorm, en getuigt van jullie vermogen om voor publiek een gelaagde ervaring te creëren die ons uitnodigend en overtuigend jullie werk en jullie werelden binnen trekt.

Met zoveel inspirerende presentaties en zoveel talent, was kiezen niet gemakkelijk.

Uiteindelijk kozen we voor een kunstenaar die buitengewoon avontuurlijk én zorgvuldig, met heel originele beeldtaal en inventief gebruik van de ruimte, een installatie creëerde waarin je als bezoeker kunt blijven dwalen en steeds nieuwe lagen ontdekt. Het werk ontstond vanuit verwondering over de wereld van morgen, die op ons afkomt maar als je goed kijkt overal om ons heen al in de kiem aanwezig is. Het werk is daarmee politiek en onderzoekend, maar ook speels, poëtisch, soms haast surreëel, omdat niets is wat het lijkt. Daardoor is het ervaren van dit werk ook een oefening in kijken, opnieuw kijken, en verder blijven kijken dan het eerste gezicht.

Gilbert de Bontridder Prize 2026

The jury consisted of Hicham Khalidi, Morena Bamberger and myself, Anke Bangma – two curators and an artist. All three of us were deeply impressed by the final presentations of the visual artists in the Stuers Building.

Your presentations are authentic and original, with their own themes, visual language, imagination and use of media and materials. Moreover, your presentations also have things in common. To begin with, it was striking how you challenged yourselves; each of you has created something that is both experimental and ambitious. Sometimes, this even meant consciously taking a big, new artistic step. This shows courage and mature confidence in your artistic skill – a confidence for which the study programme clearly prepared you.

What also stood out was the boldness and finesse with which you have given life to your work in dialogue with the beautiful spaces in the Stuers Building. With imposing or, conversely, very subtle interventions, you have made the spaces – and how visitors move through them – part of the work. This greatly enhances the impact of your work and demonstrates your ability to create a layered experience for the public that invites and convinces them to engage with your work and your worlds.

With so many inspiring presentations and so much talent, choosing a winner was not easy.

In the end, we chose an artist who, in an exceptionally meticulous yet adventurous way, and with a very original visual language and an inventive use of space, has created an installation in which visitors can keep wandering and discovering new layers. The work reflects a sense of wonder about the world of tomorrow, which is drawing ever nearer. However, if you look closely, the seeds of tomorrow are already all around us in the present. The work is therefore political and investigative, but also playful, poetic and sometimes almost surreal, because nothing is what it seems. As a result, experiencing this work is also an exercise in looking, taking a second look and continuing to look beyond the first impression.

The Gilbert de Bontridder Prize goes to Emma Penders.
